Rantings and Ravings

I heard a Christian DJ this morning talking about evolution and creation. To my infuriation he said that he saw truth in both evolution and creation. I was so upset! I listened for a little while trying to figure out if I was hearing him incorrectly and to my continuing frustration he was saying exactly what I had first thought he was saying. What has happened to our Christian body, that an older man could say on the radio that he saw truth in something unscriptural. Not only did he say he saw truth in both, but he saw problems with both. There are so many different angles to go about saying that he is wrong. Scripture is complete, God said, thus it is, and if you believe some of what God is saying the only way you can stay consistent is to believe all of what He says. I was so upset that this man was speaking on the air about such a thing to people that would be highly influenced by what he said, and that he could actually think such a thing. What have we done that our Christians don't know what they believe, why they believe it and why they need to believe something?

Agreed, it is infuriating.

This is a sad reality, and a result of the church's failure to be one. I know that serious errors that began to crop up in the centuries preceding the Reformation necessitated a drastic response, but since the Reformation, there have been serious errors that cause non-Roman Catholics to split further and further to where there are tens of thousands of denominations, and no accountability to one another. Thus, there is no accountability for the loose cannons on the radio.

That DJ is just the tip of the iceberg. The purportedly Christian television network is even worse. Their top person of influence is not even a Christian, by any historical definition of the word.

I know we are left saying, how do we get from here (total schism) to there (unity). And the answer is certainly not in setting aside true and important doctrinal differences. To sacrifice truth for "unity" is as bad (or worse) than sacrificing unity for truth. But I think that sincere Christians must begin seriously considering Jesus' prayer in John 17 that his followers be one, and at least engage in dialogue across the barriers that divide Protestant denominations from each other, and Protestants from Roman Catholics in the Western Church, and the Western Church from the Eastern Church. It's a long way there, but only when the church has a semblance of unity will there be effective discipline against loose cannons.

And the more we talk to one another, the more we will come to find what really divides us, and what is the product of polemics on both sides. Hopefully we will come to unity on those things on which we agree, and begin to hammer out what the truth really is on the issues that divide us. And I know, from personal experience, that when one honestly dialogues with those with whom he disagrees, it is possible to change ones own mind, and come to new conclusions. It has taken many years for me to arrive where I am now, but I took no giant steps along the way: only baby steps at each juncture where I realized that the Bible taught differently that what I believed. Over 25 years, a lot of movement can occur, if one is willing to take baby steps. The key is to be open enough to change, but to change only when you are convinced by Scripture, soundly understood, that you are wrong. And I'd much rather change than keep being wrong.

Wow! When you get to going JFC, you have a lot to say. :) It is very sad that the Dj was just the tip of the ice berg and I knew that, but it did not make it any less infuriating. Thanks for the comment.

MBIM, Thank you for the Valentine wish. I hope you had a blessed day as well.

Quirk # something or other on one of the lists I was tagged with ...

I tend to give background, or extensive analysis, to document whatever position I'm taking.

Anytime I use your blog to espouse my opinions in an out-of-line sort of way, just take me to the corner and gently straighten me out ... I promise I will abide by the chastising rod. (Said in a silly sort of way, but absolutely serious ... I don't want to misuse your blog.)

Anyway, I really do appreciate your original comment, and concur that it is, indeed, infuriating for one who professes Christianity to waffle on the Creator.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate in the discussion ...

Deborah,

It is sad that our Christian groups are falling apart and don't know the Lord and what He teaches.

Thank you for the comment.
